Richard Deakin, Head of Advanced Nuclear Technologies, BEIS

Richard led on the Government department’s workstreams on Commercialisation of Small Nuclear in the UK and the report of the Expert Finance Working Group on Small Reactors published 2018.

Richard will give a timely update on how soon SMRs and AMRs will begin contributing to the UK’s clean energy output.

David Homfray  

David A. Homfray, Head of Engineering Realisation, UK Atomic Energy Authority

David is at the heart of fusion research. He is an Engineer in Charge of the Joint European Torus (JET), currently the world’s most powerful fusion machine, and he also leads a team that is maturing the technologies needed to build a working fusion power plant. David believes it is one of the most important areas of research that humankind has ever undertaken, and he will see it happen in his career.

Tom Hughes, Independent Site Inspector at EDF Energy (HPC)

Chartered Mechanical Engineer and specialist in Light Water Reactor technology, nuclear safety assessment and technical training. Currently in the role of Independent Site Inspector at the Hinkley Point C EPR nuclear new-build project, tasked with a range of assurance activities to ensure nuclear safety of the as-built plant.

Chris Johnson  

Chris Johnson, Professor and Head of Computing Science, University of Glasgow

Chirs has worked on safety and security related projects for a range of organisations including various groups in the UK government, the European Commission, NASA, NATS and more.

Chris will take part in ‘Cyber security surgery’ where you can drop-in to discuss your concerns with him and a representative of the National Cyber Security Centre.
